Anna,
Now that you’re 16, you have the freedom to drive and go and do pretty much whatever you want, whenever we let you. You have the ability to take care of your needs while also being helpful to the family (thanks for picking up the junior high kids on your first licensed day!).
Now that you’re 16, you have the responsibility of caring for your vehicle and the inhabitants in it. You have the ability to control where and when you arrive places as well as how long you stay. No more waiting for Mom or Dad to quit talking at church!
Now that you’re 16, however, tread lightly with your old parents. 16 years ago, right at this moment, I was wondering how in the world I was going to get you out and when I did…what was I supposed to do with you besides love you?
Good news: we figured it out.
16 years ago, I used to be your wheels, pushing you for miles and miles in our beloved jog stroller. Remember, you were my first. Now that you’re 16, remember to drive me around once in awhile. I promise that I won’t cry like you used to when you went through that phase of hating your car seat, but I will whine a little if you don’t let me hang out with you once in a while.
Now that you’re 16, you’re going to be so much more independent. When you were born and well into your toddlerhood, your dad loved his little sidekick. You were his buddy. You were his first cattlewoman. Remember that even though it may take more time, your dad still needs his friend around once in a while.
Now that you’re 16, I can’t help but race ahead. Next birthday will be 17. Then 18. Then college, and I can’t go there today, because I already watched you drive away in your car and about lost it. I’m not sad that you’re growing up. That’s not it. Wistful, maybe? Being your mom through every stage of your life has been a joy. But now that you’re 16, I see you as the woman I hoped you would be the day I held you for the first time and marveled that you had FINGERNAILS. Who knew? Babies are born with razor sharp fingernails.
Now that you’re 16, enjoy this time. Don’t rush it. You’re a planner and sometimes a worrier. Life is fast and hard and rich and full. But here’s what you need to know: you won’t regret taking time to step back and enjoy all the little moments and the big ones. Plus, a slower driver is a safer driver {wink, wink}.
Now that you’re 16, your dad and I are celebrating the freedom that a third driver brings.
But mostly, now that you’re 16, we celebrate the wonderful woman you have become and continue to be.
Our dearest Anna Grace. Our first. Our leader. Our DRIVER. We love you and cherish you now that you’re 16 and always.
Love,
Mom
